Hiking
Warren County is located in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest and has amazing hiking opportunities. You can spend your time in the Kinzua area or in the State Parks and Game Lands. You will see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world while exploring Warren County including, fabulous overlooks and natural waterfalls. When exploring Warren County you should always be on the lookout for its spectacular natural wildlife.
Warren County offers opportunities for the most experienced hikers and for those who want to relax and easily make their way through the wilderness.
Hiking Trails
Adams Run Trail
Located in Chapman State Park this trail highlights: Meadows, spruce and pine plantations, partial view Terrain: Gradual descents and ascents, with a few steeper sections.

Buckaloons Seneca Interpretive Trail
This easy trail is ideal for children. It is educational in that it illustrates the relationship between a river and its tributaries. In quick succession, you hike along the Allegheny River; Brokenstraw Creek, a primary tributary; and Irvine Run, a secondary tributary. Heart’s Content Improvement Trails
Two interlocking interpretive loops introduce the towering old-growth trees on a neck-craning journey. Signs identify tree species, compare bark, explain succession, and discuss forest evolution. The initial 0.25-mile loop offers wheelchair and stroller access. An audiotape may be checked out at the ranger district or, in summer, from the host at Heart’s Content Campground.

Hemlock Run
There are two highlights to this hike that make it a must-do: the view of the sparkling green waters of Chapel Bay and a world-class beaver dam the size of a football field. This hike is mostly downhill, but it’s not easy. The multiple stream crossings and the effort it takes to pick your way across the rocks make this a challenging—but rewarding —hike.

Hickory Creek Wilderness Trail
Hickory Creek Wilderness is a congressionally designated wilderness area, with scenic streams and campsites, woodlands, meadows and glades, wildlife
Terrain: Trail follows mostly level or rolling terrain, with gradual changes in elevation
Vegetation: Northern hardwood forest predominant, with occasional hemlocks and white pines; some trees sizable; glades and meadows common along stream.
Hunters Ridge Trail
The Hunters Ridge Trail is the longest and most difficult at Chapman State Park. Together with the Warming Hut Trail, an enjoyable 3mile loop is formed. Access roads to oil wells cross the trail at numerous junctures.

Lowlands Trail
An established trail led to the bottom of the cliffs to reveal some of the most impressive cliffs, boulders, crevasses, and rock overhangs in the ANF. The true highlight of Jakes Rocks is not its views, but what lies beneath them.

Penny Run Trail
The Penny Run Trail is probably the most scenic in the state park. About half of the trail is in the national forest. The trail features a beautiful hemlock forest with small streams that provides a cool hike even on a hot summer day.

Rimrock Overlook Trail
Of the three developed overlooks in the ANF, Rimrock provides the finest view and is a popular destination within the forest. It also offers much more than views. A short trail system takes you down a rock staircase through a narrow crevasse and past spectacular cliffs, boulders; and in the summer, deep fractures that emit cold air.

Tidioute Overlook Trail
This small triangular loop features two vistas: River and Town Overlooks. Begin by hiking a short distance underneath hemlocks to the impressive River Overlook. The overlook is about 500 feet above the river and provides a nice view of a narrow valley surrounded by steep plateaus.
Tom’s Run and Ironwood Loops Trail
Located in Heart’s Content these trails are also known as the Heart’s Content Cross-Country Ski Trails. Both loops are easy and offer similar scenery.

Minister Creek Trail
Minister Creek Trail is one of the most popular trails in the Allegheny National Forest. After a half mile climb from the parking lot to the trail head, you begin the rock and root-covered trail by heading into the valley for your first encounter with the bubbling waters of Minister Creek. As you ascend from the valley, you are in the midst of mammoth sandstone boulders, some 100 feet wide and 50 feet tall.

Morrison Trail
This trail travels through varied forest, mountain laurel passages, and boulder areas, with a side-trail visit to a shoreline camp on the Kinzua Creek Arm of Allegheny Reservoir.
Special Attractions: Hike-in campground, Allegheny Reservoir, mixed second-growth forest, crystalline runs, unique rock features, wildlife sightings, and mountain laurel blooms (mid- to late June).

North County Trail
This section features the beautiful Minister Creek and massive rock outcrops. A worthwhile side trip along the Tanbark Trail will take you to the impressive old-growth forests at Hearts Content.
